Two River Little League Field Maintenance

TRLL Field Maintenance Guide

Keeping our fields in tip-top shape requires a lot of maintenance and people pitching in their time and energy. Although the recreation departments across the Two River community regularly spend money to repair fields and coordinate general maintenance throughout the season, it is the efforts of our coaches, volunteers, and parents that allow us to enjoy great playing conditions.

It is important, however, that when we pitch in to help rake or prep fields, we do so in the correct manner. Improper maintenance can lead to field erosion, standing water, poor playability, and increased costs for towns and taxpayers.

Pre-Game Field Checklist

  • Check for standing water or unsafe areas — if present, notify the town or league rep.
  • Rake around bases and batter’s box without pulling infield mix toward the grass edge.
  • Fill in low spots (batter’s box, pitcher’s mound, base paths).
  • Line the field only after it’s fully prepped and raked.
  • Remove any debris, glass, or trash before play begins.

During the Game

  • Monitor wet spots or divots that could develop.
  • Stop play if thunder or lightning is observed — wait 30 minutes after the last occurrence before resuming.
  • Remind players and fans to avoid walking on wet or soft dirt areas when possible.

Post-Game Field Responsibilities

  • Rake the batter’s box, pitcher’s mound, and base paths gently — rake level, not uphill.
  • Do not rake infield material toward grass edges — this creates “lips” that ruin drainage and cause hops.
  • Drag the infield if you’re trained and a drag mat is available (only when dry).
  • Pick up all trash from dugouts, bleachers, and surrounding area.
  • Return rakes, drags, and lining equipment neatly to the shed or designated area.

What Not To Do

  • Do not rake toward the grass edges — always rake parallel or away from the turf line.
  • Do not drag the field when it’s wet — it will cause clumping and ruts.
  • Do not leave holes in the batter’s box or mound area.
  • Do not assume someone else will take care of post-game cleanup.

Rainouts and Field Closures

  • All towns aim to communicate closures by 3:00 PM the day of the game.
  • Sometimes, field conditions are judged on a field-by-field basis and may be evaluated on-site by coaches or rec staff.
  • If your field looks unsafe — standing water, puddling on base paths, or lightning in the area — DO NOT PLAY.
  • When in doubt, contact your coach or a league board member for guidance.

Thank You!

Your efforts as a parent, coach, or volunteer help create a better and safer experience for all players. Field care is everyone’s responsibility — and with a little effort and the right technique, we can keep Two River Little League fields among the best in the region.
